Spices:  Metabolism Boosters

Spices not only add amazing flavor and color to food dishes, studies show that various spices may also provide equally amazing weight loss and other healing and health promoting benefits.

For example, in a study conducted by researchers at England's Oxford Polytechnic Institute found that just one teaspoon of yellow mustard seeds boosts metabolism by 25% for several hours, which translates into burning more calories and weight loss.

Spices (and dried herbs) are rich in various antioxidants, phytochemicals and other micronutrients that are linked to an array of health benefits, including neutralizing and removing toxins, reducing inflammation, increasing energy levels, and possibly even turning off fat genes  - according to the latest and ongoing research in the emerging field of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics.

Spices also satisfy taste buds and can replace or dramatically lower the use and intake of salt and toxic sugar, thereby reducing the number of calories consumed from sugar and bloating.

Coconut Oil and Health [Infographic]

Top 25 Reasons to Use Coconut Oil [Infographic]
 from PhysiciansReference.com
In the book, Eat Fat, Lose Fat: The Healthy Alternative to Trans Fats, Mary G. Enig, PhD asserts that in order to enjoy optimal health and to lose weight, the body needs healthy fats, including a certain amount of saturated fat.  Dr. Enig writes:

"Among saturated fats, coconut is queen because of its special properties."

Other well respected functional medicine physicians and nutritionists support the consumption of coconut oil not only for a myriad of health benefits but also to boost metabolism and speed up weight loss.

For example, Dr. Mark Hyman's 10-Day Detox Diet (see: The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet: Activate Your Body's Natural Ability to Burn Fat and Lose Weight Fast), does not permit refined and processed vegetable oils like corn, soybean, canola and sunflower.   Instead, the Detox Diet calls for consumption of extra virgin olive oil and extra virgin coconut oil (coconut butter) as the primary sources of healthy fat.

In addition to promoting weight loss and general good health, coconut oil also has excellent moisturizing and healing properties when applied topically.

This infographic illustrates the top 25 reasons to use coconut oil to aid in physical, emotional and mental health and well-being, promote weight loss, and as a completely natural and healthy hair, nail and skincare beauty product.

15 Foods to Boost Metabolism [Infographic]

How Certain Foods Boost Metabolism, Aid in Weight Loss
How Foods Boost Metabolism

Certain foods are thought to boost metabolism for a variety of reasons.

Foods high in protein require the expenditure of more energy to digest and metabolize.

Foods high in dietary fiber, like almonds, beans, apples, spinach, broccoli and other fruits and vegetables, help keep insulin levels steady.  This aids in preventing the body from storing fat.  Fiber also helps to control appetite because it gives a feeling of fullness.

Foods high in calcium, like fortified yogurt and soy milk, are thought to aid in the fat burning process.

Warming foods and spices, like curry, cinnamon, jalapenos and other chili peppers, have a chemical compound that temporarily release stress hormones that speed up metabolism.

Foods with unique chemical properties, like grapefruit, reduce insulin levels which promotes weight loss.

Coffee and green tea contain caffeine which raises the heart rate.  A faster heart rate burns more calories.  Tea contains a chemical called EGCG.  Studies have shown that a combination of caffeine and EGCG helped burn up to 80 extra calories a day.  Caffeine, however, is not recommended for many people and should be consumed with caution.
